One of the many awesome things about living in Portland is the abundance of food trucks/carts/buses/shacks, etc. After growing up in SoCal, I often remarked that the best Mexican food could often be found from a "Roach Coach" or a woman walking down the street w/ a cooler full of tamales. While food trucks have long since stopped being all about Mexican food from a sketchy trailer stopped at a construction site, the sentiment remains. Sometimes the very best food comes from a cart on the side of the road & not a sit down restaurant.
Portland is pretty famous for having a massive amount of food trucks from the Grilled Cheese Grill to hand pulled noodles to gyros to poutine to gumbo, there's something for everyone. There are so many that they form food truck pods all over the city. This is great 'cause you can get an incredibly diverse food selection, all in one place & it's usually damn tasty & quite cheap. When you come visit me, we'll be sure to hit a few up.
Anyhow, this afternoon I went old school & stopped by the little taco truck right down the street from my house, run by a Latino woman who's not much older than me. The signs on the truck are hand drawn & it's nothing fancy at all. However, who can turn down a classic street taco for $1? Not me. For less than $4 I had a fresh, delicious lunch, tipped & supported a tiny independent business. Honestly, can't go wrong.
So today, November 12th I'm thankful for food trucks.
