We went down Mon. afternoon (it's about 5 hrs) and left Thurs. afternoon. It's a really cute little town w/ lovely parks all over the historic district. We had a pretty good time. We didn't really do anything exciting. I mean, we took a trolley tour, which I wouldn't recommend to anyone under the age of 60...it was expensive and when we realized that the whole downtown area is only about 2.5 miles we wished we had just walked at our own pace and read the historical placards. Some of the houses are are cool, the architecture is so neat. We took a nice walk along the river and marveled at how incredibly massive the ships are, we discussed slavery and cotton and shipping...all in all, pretty interesting. There is of course damn tasty food to be found, esp. seafood. We ate a ton of it and washed it down with far too many drinks. We slept in every night, wandered around the city and ate and drank to our hearts content.

The drive home was loooooooong. :-)

Review Info for Travelers:

Hotel - Four Points by Sheraton where MLK and Bay St. meet. The hotel is a few blocks from River Street, very close to the downtown historic district. We got a great rate that included breakfast, which was actually pretty good. There were fresh baked cookies in our room and we got upgraded to a suite. The staff was all very friendly and we could walk everywhere.

Trolley Tour - We had heard over and over that we should do this. Well, I'll be the first to say, skip it. It's 25 bucks per person and the entire route is only 2.2 miles. Sure, the conductor's are cute and have some neat information, but for $50 we could've bought a book, wandered ourselves and still had enough left over for lunch.

Haunted Pup Crawl - Like ghosts? Like booze? Go for it! It's cheap, it's fun and interesting.

Moon River Brewing - A nice little brew pub right on Bay St. They've got reasonably priced food and local made beer, all of which is tasty.

Cotton Exchange on River Street - Kinda of pricey, but so is everything on River St. The food is really good, but the crab legs were the best. You can get a lb. of crab legs for 13 bucks, which is pretty damn decent. Their crab soup was the best I'd had in a long time. It's a laid back atmosphere, esp. if you sit at the bar, which is great for people watching.

Boars Head Tavern technically on River, but it's at the end of a row and up on the right (doesn't make sense now? it will when you're there). SO worth checking out! This was my fav. place to eat. We went twice - once for apps and once for lunch. Everything was really great.

Kevin Barry's also on River St. - an Irish pub in a really cool old building. Potato soup was pretty good, shepherds pie was quite good. Also, they have live music every night.

Molly MacPhersons on Congress St - a Scottish pub. We only had an appetizer here but it was good. This is a nice place to grab a couple beers when you need a break from being a tourist. It's near City Market, easy to find and the staff is very friendly.

Jazz'd is also downtown and great for tapas. It was recommended to us by a couple of locals.

Have fun! It's a cute town w/ a lot of interesting history, great food and lots to drink. Be careful, I found everything to be more expensive than we had anticipated.
